On Friday, the official Twitter account for Manga Time Kirara magazine by Houbunsha announced that Bocchi the Rock!, a four-panel manga by Aki Hamaji, has reached over 2 million copies in circulation. The story of Bocchi the Rock! centers around a high school girl named Hitori “Bocchi-chan” (“Loner”) Gotō who is passionate about playing the guitar. However, she spends most of her time alone at home, playing her guitar. One day, she meets Nijika Ijichi, who is in search of a guitarist for her band called “Kessoku Band.”

The popularity of the manga led to the creation of an anime series, which premiered on Tokyo MX, BS11, Gunma TV, and Tochigi TV channels on October 9. The series also aired on MRT Miyazaki Broadcasting, MBS, RKB Mainichi Broadcasting, and AT-X, while ABEMA streamed it simultaneously with the earliest television broadcast. Crunchyroll also streamed the anime as it aired in Japan.
