The spinoff novel series by Ōsaki is set in Gintama High School and revolves around Ginpachi Sakata, a teacher with an unconventional personality and appearance, as well as his students. The series was first introduced in 2006, and Shueisha published the latest volume in 2018. Sorachi, the creator of the original Gintama manga, is credited for the work. Previously, 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei was animated as a short at the end of various Gintama anime episodes.

The original Gintama manga, described as a “science-fiction period-drama comedy,” began serialization in 2003 and ended in June 2019. It has sold over 55 million copies worldwide and has been adapted into several TV anime series comprising 367 episodes, as well as three previous anime films. The latest anime series premiered in July 2018. Moreover, the manga has also inspired original video anime (OVA), event anime, two live-action films, and two live-action net spinoffs. Viz Media has published the first 23 volumes of the manga in English.

Gintama THE VERY FINAL, the third and last anime film based on the finale of the original manga and featuring new story elements, premiered in Japan in January 2021. The film was screened in North American theaters by Eleven Arts with Japanese audio and English subtitles, and with an English dub in November 2021. Eleven Arts and Shout! Factory subsequently released the movie digitally in January 2022, and on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in February 2022.

A net anime special titled Gintama The Semi-Final, serving as a two-episode prequel to the film, was also inspired by the manga. The net anime premiered exclusively in Japan on the online dTV service in January 2021. Additionally, the film has a novel adaptation by Mirei Miyamoto that was released in January.
